The library has been active since the Pedagogic Institute was established
in 1957 with a catalogue of 1000 books mainly in the Albanian language.
Today this library has a catalogue of 150 thousand inventoried copies.
These books serve mainly to the fields of Pedagogy, Psychology, Didactics,
Economy, Law, Literature, Linguistic etc. These books are in Albanian
and in foreign languages.
The most important catalogue is that of Albanologist and Balkanologist.
The precious antiquarian of our University can be found in this catalogue.
This antiquarian is of course one of the best in Albania and it is
composed of 32 rare books that date to the beginning of XVI century.
The old fond is under the process of digitalisation to provide its
long life and in the same time to be available to the readers.
The library of University of Shkodra, "Luigj Gurakuqi" has
permanent exchanges with other national and international libraries.
The main data of this library have been given to "World Guide
to Libraries" since 1995 by K.G. Saur printing house.
This library has permanent contacts with different institutions and
personalities of Albanian studies in Kosovo, Austria, Germany, Italy,
France and other countries.
It is important to stress the fact that this year our university starts
the new academic year with a new library. The new university library
has a surface of more than 3000mē and book shelves at a length
of 8 m lineal which can hold 400 000 books. There are plans for a
children's library as well. The university library is handicap accessible.
In the library there is a changing room for babies (for mothers who
come with their babies). This library has an auditorium with 100 seats.
There are 300 seats in different reading rooms and 50 multimedia stations.
